UNIT: 12 A.G.H – A.I.F. Abroad
2 Sept 1942
Dear Robin,
Many thanks for all your letters. I look forward so much to getting them that be sure and write me lots.
I’m sorry you got such a fright Darling, but when it was all over it was not so bad after all, was it? Remember it’s not what actually happens but what people imagine might happen that is chiefly responsible for fear and if sufficient people let their imagination run riot you get panic and disorder that does more harm than the original danger – which indeed may never have existed. So never be afraid my Darling – remember that fear and courage are both infectious. Even if you are afraid, if you conceal it, you will help others to be brave. Now that you know that there was nothing for you to fear, you need not let your imagination trick you next time. Just do coolly and without fuss what you are trained to do, that is discipline. Lack of discipline wrecked the British and A.I.F. in Malaya just as good discipline won A.I.F a reputation for all time at Amiens last war (Villeneuve Bretonneau).
Tell me all about your new play – then by the time I get your letter it will almost be the same time as you are actually producing it.
Lots of love my Darling – write me often
Daddy
